HARTFORD, CONN. (July 4, 2025)–As part of the official observance of Independence Day, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Connecticut organized the annual program at the State Capitol on July fourth.

VFW Connecticut Commander Charles M. Pickett presided as master of ceremony for the event, which was organized in conjunction with the Department of Connecticut American Legion.

The principal speaker was Matthew Vallier, Connecticut Capitol Flag Preservation with the Office of Legislative Management. Additionally, Vallier gave a subsequent tour of the 4 1/2 floor, where historic Connecticut flags, decorations, and medals are stored.

Additionally, the program included remarks by the Hon. Denise W. Merrill, the Connecticut Chair for the America 250 | CT Commission.

American Legion Department Color Guard Captain Steve Fahy and Color Guard led the patriotic massing of the colors, State Patriotic Instructor Cynthia L. Riley sang the National Anthem and “God Bless America,” and the invocation and benediction were offered by State Chaplain Kenneth C. Hartline.
